YouTube Partner Program Requirements (2025)
To join the YouTube Partner Program and earn from ads, you must meet all of these requirements simultaneously:
| Requirement | Full YPP | YPP Lite |
|---|---|---|
| Subscribers | 1,000 | 500 |
| Watch Hours (12 months) | 4,000 hours | 3,000 hours |
| Channel Age | 12 months | 3 months |
| Community Guidelines Strikes | None active | None active |
| 2-Step Verification | Required | Required |
| Monetization policies complied with | Required | Required |
YPP Lite (introduced 2023) allows creators to earn from channel memberships and Super Thanks at lower thresholds. Full ad revenue requires the full YPP tier.
What Happens After You Apply
Once you meet the requirements and apply in YouTube Studio → Earn, YouTube’s team manually reviews your channel. This review typically takes 1–4 weeks. They’re checking for:
- Original content (not re-uploaded from other creators)
- Compliance with YouTube’s monetization policies
- Advertiser-friendly content
- Authentic audience (not purchased subscribers)
- No active community guidelines strikes
Common Reasons for YPP Rejection
If you’ve hit the numbers but been rejected, these are the most common reasons:
- Re-uploaded content: Compilations, reaction videos without commentary, or slideshows with minimal original contribution
- Insufficient content: Too few videos for YouTube to accurately assess your channel
- Policy violations: Even if not currently struck, past violations can affect your application
- Purchased subscribers: Inauthentic growth patterns are flagged by YouTube’s systems
- Misleading metadata: Titles, tags, or thumbnails that misrepresent video content
How to Use This Checker
- Open YouTube Studio at studio.youtube.com and sign in to your channel.
- Click Analytics in the left sidebar, then select the Overview tab.
- Note your current subscriber count from the dashboard — this is your real-time total.
- Go to the Reach tab in Analytics and find Watch time (hours). Set the date range to the last 365 days to see your rolling 12-month total.
- Check your channel age: go to YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Basic info to see your channel creation date.
- Verify you have no active Community Guidelines strikes: go to YouTube Studio → Channel Dashboard → Channel status.
- Confirm 2-Step Verification is enabled on your Google Account at myaccount.google.com/security.
- Enter these numbers into the checker above to get your pass/fail result and see exactly how far you are from each threshold.
Use the same data source every time you check — YouTube Studio is the only authoritative source. Third-party tools may show subscriber counts that are several hours behind.
What Your Result Means
The checker gives you a clear status on each of the five requirements. Here is how to interpret each result:
Subscribers
Under 500: Focus on consistent uploads and finding your audience. Subscriber growth before 1,000 is often slower than expected — this is normal. 500–999: You meet YPP Lite but not full YPP. Keep posting. 1,000+: This threshold is cleared.
Watch Hours
Under 1,000 hours: You have significant ground to cover. Focus on longer videos and improving retention. 1,000–3,999 hours: You’re in range. Review our 4,000 Watch Hours guide for acceleration strategies. 4,000+ hours: This threshold is cleared — verify the 12-month window is correct.
Channel Age
Under 3 months: Neither YPP nor YPP Lite is available yet. Keep building. 3–11 months: YPP Lite is available if other metrics are met. 12+ months: Age requirement is fully cleared.
Community Guidelines Strikes
Active strikes prevent YPP application entirely. Strikes expire after 90 days if no further violations occur. If you have an active strike, wait it out and review YouTube’s Community Guidelines carefully before continuing to upload.
Monetization Policy Compliance
YouTube’s team checks your entire video library, not just recent uploads. Ensure all videos — even older ones — comply with advertiser-friendly content guidelines. Videos can be individually age-gated or made limited-audience without affecting your channel status.
Factors That Affect Your YPP Eligibility Timeline
Two channels with identical subscriber counts can have very different timelines to YPP approval. These are the variables that actually determine how quickly you qualify:
- Video length: A 15-minute video watched at 40% retention generates 6 minutes of watch time per view. A 3-minute video watched at 50% generates only 1.5 minutes. Longer videos accumulate watch hours much faster per upload.
- Upload frequency: Each new video is a new watch-hour accumulation engine. Publishing two videos per week generates watch hours roughly twice as fast as one per week, assuming similar performance.
- Audience retention rate: A channel with 55% average view duration accumulates 57% more watch hours than one with 35% retention on the same number of views. Improving your hook and pacing directly accelerates your YPP timeline.
- Evergreen vs. trending content: A trending video gets views for 2–4 weeks then dies. An evergreen tutorial can accumulate views — and watch hours — for years. Channels that prioritize evergreen content reach YPP faster because the watch hours compound.
- Whether you delete videos: Deleted videos lose their watch hours from your rolling total. If you’re close to 4,000 hours, keep underperforming videos up unless they actively violate policies.
- Shorts strategy: Shorts views do not count toward the 4,000-hour requirement. Posting only Shorts will not help you reach full YPP through this path — though Shorts can drive viewers to long-form content.
How to Speed Up Your YPP Application
There is no shortcut past YouTube’s thresholds, but there are legitimate strategies that accelerate the timeline:
- Focus on searchable evergreen topics. Use TubeBuddy or vidIQ to find low-competition keywords in your niche with genuine search volume. Videos that rank in YouTube Search get consistent monthly views without requiring algorithmic luck.
- Increase video length intentionally. If your typical video is 5–8 minutes, test extending to 12–15 minutes with a more comprehensive treatment of the topic. Watch time per upload increases proportionally.
- Fix your first 60 seconds. The highest drop-off point in every video is the opening. Cutting your intro, getting to the value faster, and opening with a compelling hook directly improves average view duration and therefore watch hours.
- Create playlists from existing content. YouTube autoplay extends session time when videos are organized into playlists. A viewer who watches 3 videos in a playlist session contributes 3x the watch hours of someone who watches one video and leaves.
- Use Shorts to drive long-form views. While Shorts views don’t count directly, a Short that teases a full video and drives 500 extra views to it can add 25–50 watch hours from a single piece of content.
